US-wide rules worth knowing
Hotels must accept service dogs, even with a "no pets" policy
Under the ADA, a service animal is a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. Hotels can’t restrict these guests to "pet-friendly" rooms and can’t charge a cleaning fee for hair or dander, though they may charge for real damage, the same as for any guest.

Staff can ask only two questions about a service dog
When it isn’t obvious, staff may ask only (1) whether the dog is required because of a disability and (2) what task it is trained to perform. They can’t ask for documentation or a demonstration. Service dogs can’t be left alone in the hotel room.

Emotional support animals are pets for hotel purposes
Emotional support, comfort and therapy animals aren’t service animals under the ADA, so hotel pet fees and limits can apply (Drury, for example, says so explicitly). Some states have their own rules.

Airlines may treat emotional support animals as pets
Since January 11, 2021, the DOT rule defines a service animal for flights as a trained dog, lets airlines treat emotional support animals as pets, and lets them limit each passenger to two service animals.

FAQ
Which major US hotel chains have no pet fee?
On their official policy pages, Kimpton charges no pet fee or deposit, and Motel 6 says pets stay free. Red Roof Inn and Red Roof PLUS+ don’t charge for the first pet; the second is $15 per night.
Which hotel chains allow big dogs?
Kimpton states no size or weight limit. Red Roof and Best Western allow up to 80 lbs per pet, Drury allows 80 lbs combined, and Motel 6 allows 150 lbs combined for two pets. Aloft and the Hyatt example we checked cap dogs at 40 and 50 lbs.
How many dogs can I bring to a hotel room?
Two is the most common limit among the chains we checked (Motel 6, Red Roof, La Quinta, Best Western, Drury, Loews). Kimpton states no limit at brand level, but individual Kimpton hotels can set their own.
Do hotel chains have breed restrictions?
None of the brand-level pages we checked list banned breeds. Kimpton explicitly welcomes any breed, and Motel 6 says it "generally" doesn’t enforce breed restrictions. Individual hotels and local laws can still differ, so confirm with the property.
Is the pet fee the same at every hotel in a chain?
Often not. Hilton says fees "vary by hotel", Choice, Hyatt and Marriott (Aloft) publish policies per property, and Best Western publishes only a maximum ($40 per day).
Do I pay a pet fee for a service dog?
No. Under the ADA, hotels can’t charge cleaning fees for a service animal, though they can charge for actual damage. Emotional support animals aren’t service animals under the ADA, so pet fees can apply.
